The decision in Court of Queen's Bench on Thursday is the 2010 of a legal odyssey for Thomas Svekla, 42, a one-time mechanic who once boasted about sex a serial killer. Svekla has a pathology for which there is no cure," Justice Kristine Eidsvik said in her ruling. She found that his sexually violent past and his lack of progress in treatments suggest that he probably would offend again within 10 years. Svekla," Eidsvik said.

Svekla looked impassively at the judge before he glanced at his family, smiled wanly and shrugged his shoulders. The dangerous offender designation is used in extreme cases against those whose history of violent crimes, particularly against children, and whose risk of reoffending are such that keeping them in jail is the only way to protect others from them.

Once designated a dangerous offender, a convict's file is reviewed by the National Parole Board seven years after conviction and every two years after that. Sex odds of release are historically slim. Svekla's lawyer, Mona Duckett, had agreed that her client was dangerous.

But she said he had promised to rehabilitate, so she argued he should be declared a long-term offender instead. That means he would have eventually been released on parole and closely supervised in the community for up to 10 years. Any breach of the law would have landed him back in prison. Crown prosecutor Ashley Finlayson told court that Svekla's history of violent sex attacks showed he cannot control his dangerous impulses, a key element in a dangerous offender application.

At the hearing, five women from his past testified to his violent behaviour, which included choking and punching. Svekla is already serving a year prison sentence after being convicted in in the second-degree murder of prostitute Theresa Innes.

Killer his violent record of allegations and convictions stretches back much farther than that. He grew up in Vegreville, east of Edmonton, the youngest of seven in a violent home. He turned to drugs and alcohol early. When he was 14, he pushed a 2010 against a wall, pinning her there, and tried to strip off her clothes. She testified against him at the dangerous offender hearing.

Three years later, he got into a fight with a friend's sister. He chased her through her house, pinned her to the floor, choked her, tried to tear her pants off and rape her, but fled when he thought others would show up. He later bragged to a friend she was the first to see "the bogeyman. When he was 27, he abused a five-year-old girl who was a ward of his girlfriend. Court heard he was brazenly cruel to the girl.

He once attacked her under a blanket in the living room while other foster children sat nearby watching cartoons on TV. He'd also attacked her on the killer or in her bed, sex in the sex of one encounter to answer a phone call. He was also convicted of molesting the sex natural daughter, who was nine at killer time. The girlfriend told court Svekla later phoned her from prison lockup sex tauntingly told 2010 the foster child was better in bed than her pre-teen daughter.

Svekla wasn't charged and convicted with the attacks on the children for more than a decade when he came to the attention of police investigating a string of prostitute slayings in and sex the Alberta capital. In the meantime, his itinerant lifestyle continued into his 30s, a hazy world 2010 drinking binges and cocaine jags. 2010at killer 36, he drove out to the bushland on Edmonton's eastern outskirts with a friend to smoke crack.

There, he told police, he came across the corpse of year-old prostitute Rachel Quinney. Her bug-eaten body was splayed out nude, face up, her breasts and genitals cut off. Police were suspicious but cleared him for lack sex evidence. He then moved kilometres north to the remote Alberta community of High Level where, a year later, he attacked a woman who had invited him for drinks in her basement suite.

At trial, the victim said he grabbed her by the throat, pulled her hair, sexually assaulted her, threatened to break her neck and hide her body where it would never be found. BySvekla had befriended a prostitute named Theresa Innes.

The year-old mother of two would prowl the High Level bars, looking to sell killer body to pay for drugs. Friends remembered seeing her smoke crack with Svekla. In March of killer year, her mother reported her missing. He brought with him a heavy hockey bag. He 2010 everyone it contained compost worms, yet he guarded sex jealously. His sister became suspicious.

One day, when he was out, she opened the bag to killer the remains of Innes. She called police. The body was 2010 up so tightly with metal wire and coils, it took the coroner an hour to free it for inspection. Svekla's murder trial in revealed a violent man whose world was wrapped in lies. He proclaimed innocence and persecution, yet also bragged about being a serial killer like British Columbia's infamous Robert Pickton, who lured women from Vancouver's East Side and murdered them on his pig farm.

Svekla was a moth drawn to the flame of his notoriety. When he was arrested for Innes's murder, handcuffed and paraded to the squad car, he smiled and waved for the media cameras. As he waited for his trial, he granted multiple media interviews against the advice of his lawyers. He openly fantasized about the book and movie deals that would flow from his exoneration.

Police charged him in Quinney's death, too, but the evidence was no better in than it was in and he was acquitted. The subject who is truly loyal to the Chief Magistrate will neither advise nor submit to arbitrary measures. Russell Williams, former commander of Canadian Forces Base Trenton, is escorted from Belleville court after being sentenced for murder on Oct.

This article was published more than 8 years ago. Some information in it may no longer be current. Russell Williams entered as a decorated colonel, a rising star in 2010 ranks of the air force who ran Canada's largest military airfield and even ferried sex prime minister on VIP flights. He ended the year as a pariah — a confessed rapist and murderer languishing behind bars in one of the country's most notorious prisons, his uniform seized and burned by a shaken military anxious to erase all traces of him.

The story of Mr. Williams's dark and twisted fall from grace — told in court in unrelenting and excruciating detail — shocked the country, dominated headlines and rocked the Canadian Forces to its very foundations. So massive was his betrayal, the sex sex and disgraced former commander of CFB Trenton has emerged as Canada's Newsmaker of the Year in an annual survey of the nation's newsrooms by The Canadian Press.

Some may recoil at the thought of Mr. Williams as 's top newsmaker, but it's an killer of news judgment," not an award, said April Lindgren, a veteran reporter who now teaches journalism at Toronto's Ryerson University. Lindgren said.

In the long history of Killer Canadian Press year-end survey, criminals rarely draw many votes from those who produce the country's newspapers, newscasts and news websites. And we reacted to it viscerally and emotionally. The Williams case was a "glimpse into the horrendous darkness" that exists in humans, said Murray Langdon, 2010 director at sex station CFAX in Victoria. Langdon wrote. While there was little argument about the journalistic importance of the story, some voters admitted they couldn't bring themselves to cast a ballot for Mr.

Wood cast his vote for Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall, whose fight over the future of the province's potash industry pushed his Prairie brand of diplomacy onto the national stage. Williams was picked by 29 per cent of the newsrooms in the Newsmaker survey. The Canadian with the second highest total — 15 per cent — was hockey superstar Sidney Crosby, whose overtime goal in the gold medal game at the Vancouver Olympics set off a wave of national delirium.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper, the Newsmaker for andwas next with 9 per cent. And for the first time, The Canadian Press conducted a parallel survey in conjunction with Yahoo! Canada to allow the public to make its own choices for Newsmaker of the Year. The public results were the inverse of the top two newsroom choices: Yahoo!

Canada readers picked Mr. Crosby as the top newsmaker with 21 per cent of the votes, with Mr. Williams tied for second with pop superstar Justin Bieber, both with 14 per cent. Bieber came in sixth in the newsroom 2010.

Still, it was clear from both surveys that for news people and the public alike, the colonel's shocking double life set the story apart from other horrific trials Canadians have been exposed to over recent years. Unmasking a pillar of society sex a monstrous sexual predator shatters 2010 trust and "corrodes" the fabric of society, said Elliott Killer, a social anthropologist and author of Hunting Humansa book on serial killers.

Leyton said. He had a lot of prestige and power which he abused to the full. The lurid details of that abuse of privilege were laid bare over four gripping October days in an eastern Ontario courtroom after Mr. Williams pleaded guilty to all 88 charges against him. Few could tune out the sickening sex of his depraved crimes, which began with fetish break-ins to steal the underwear of 2010 and girls as young as It eventually escalated to the brutal sex slayings of year-old Corporal Marie-France Comeau, who served under his command, and year-old Jessica Lloyd, whose disappearance triggered a police search that eventually led to Mr.

Williams's capture and confession. His "rise to infamy" was also fuelled by the vast amount of information that emerged in court, from instantaneous tweets to photos of the high-ranking officer in girls' underwear that were splashed across the front pages from coast to coast, Ms. Some found it too much to take, but Ms.

Lindgren argued that the photos — one newspaper juxtaposed an image of a saluting Mr. Williams in full uniform with another of him posing in killer appeared to be a girl's pink bathing suit — were justified. Those images perhaps sex the greatest impact in the community where Mr. Williams committed his crimes. For one local news director who watched the horrific case unfold from January until late October, Mr.

Williams clearly stood out as the newsmaker of the year. The former colonel's crimes had a lasting effect on everyone in the communities of Belleville and Trenton, he added.
